Being an easier to grow coffee makes it more widely acceptable as a crop for producers, although there are still some important criteria to be met. It cannot just be grown anywhere. It’s a plant or tree that grows to about 10-12 feet. The good feature about this plant is its lack of requirement to be grown at high altitudes, which is the case with Arabica. Robusta coffee grows quite nicely at the 800 m elevation range provided it has good soil, which is found in the tropical and subtropical climates. It does well in West and Central Africa as well as parts of Asia. It will mature in about eleven months. The overall care is much less with this particular coffee because the cherries remain on the trees. Although Robusta when compared to Arabica coffee really is classed as being a lesser quality it should be remembered that it comes in second as being the best quality bean. It should be recognized for its superior quality as opposed to its secondary position to Arabica. The Robusta coffee has a very strong almost harsh taste to it, but when handled and prepared properly it makes a very acceptable cup of coffee. It is often used by manufacturers who want to make instant coffee. Mostly because it’s a cheaper bean to buy and there are not as many expectations placed on instant coffee as there is on brewed coffee. Another drawback to some coffee drinkers is that Robusta coffee has twice the amount of caffeine in it. Another very good use for this particular coffee crop is being used as a blend for espresso blends. When advertised as such it seems to boost the worth of the particular blend. In reality, though only 5-15% of the content of blend consists of Robusta, but it is enough to give the body to the espresso that is in demand. There are some worries though with global warming as to the effects in could have on the coffee plantations. Take Uganda for example if there were a mere 2 degree C increase in their temperature on a consistent basis it would have a devastating effect on the coffee crops in respect to the amount of available land that would be present. So when it comes down to want an excellent drip coffee Robusta coffee shouldn’t be your first choice but for an excellent instant coffee then you would certainly make the right choice with Robusta coffee.
