Most coffee connoisseurs believe that the best beans to choose are Arabica coffee beans. One thing you want to be careful of is that you are buying 100% arabica beans not robust which is made with robusta beans.
There is nothing wrong with robusta coffee beans and actually some people prefer the taste and in Italy, it is the most favored type of coffee. It has a slightly bitter taste to it and another interesting factor about robusta beans is that they have double the amount of caffeine compared to the Arabica.
When you go to buy your beans make sure you buy them whole and not ground. The reason being is that much of the flavor of the specialty coffee comes from the oil that is contained in the bean, which once ground is lost. The moment that these oils are exposed to oxygen, they start to lose their potency.
Make sure also, that when you buy your beans that they are in a sealed airtight bag and the best type of bag is the ones that have a one-way valve. If you are buying your beans from the supermarket, you have already noticed that they are not airtight as they are normally served in bins meaning that you are not going to get the freshest and best quality.
It should be remembered that roasted coffee beans are wonderful but the minute they come out of the roaster they start to lose their flavor. So ideally, for the optimum cup of gourmet coffee you want to buy your beans that have just been roasted.
Many people have preferences as the coffee being strong or milder. Ideally, if you want a strong cup of coffee just increase the amount of ground coffee to the hot water. The more coffee you add of course the stronger the results are going to be. You will find also as you learn more about coffee that some beans naturally have a stronger taste than others do.
Another factor that you're going to learn about is the way that the coffee is ground makes a difference as well. How fine or how coarse it is affects the taste.
Finally, the brewing of the gourmet coffee itself is very important. If use the wrong coffee maker you can take even the finest gourmet coffee and turn it into something that is unpleasant in taste and aroma.
