If you happen to hear the term “coffee shrub of Arabia or perhaps “mountain coffee” then it is in reference to coffee Arabia. Arabica coffee is not new to the world, as it is believed to be in existence in Arabia for in excess of a thousand years. In fact, it is reported that this was the first type of coffee to ever be grown. It is a species that belongs to Ethiopia and Yemen. Out all of the varieties of coffee that exist in the world today, Arabica is considered to be one of the finest for producing an exquisite cup of quality coffee. One of the advantages beside its quality that draws people to it is the fact that it has less caffeine than many of the other brands. This is good news for those that find the effects of caffeine adverse in nature. Growing coffee particularly coffee Arabica is not something that happens within a few months or even a year. It takes about seven years to reach full maturity, and it favors certain growing conditions. It likes almost up to 60 inches of rain but not in large amounts at one time. Ideally this is spread out over the course of a year. The best cultivation takes place at the higher altitudes of 1,300 -1,500 m but there are some variations in this as high at 2,800 m to as low as sea level. Coffee Arabic doesn’t mind the lower temperatures but it prefers to be grown in temperatures around 68 degrees F. It will not withstand frost. Their preference to light lies within the light shade area. Coffee plants have a tendency too overproduce and when this happens, it’s not well received by the growers. This may seem a bit odd, as one would think they would welcome a full harvest. The problem is it can lead to less than a perfect harvest and in future years harvesting. This is because the plant will make it contributions to the ripening of the berries even if it detrimental to itself. Pruning the tree will prevent this type of problem from occurring. As one can see there is much involved in the growing of coffee Arabica and perhaps by knowing a little about it satisfies the curiosity as to why it is more expensive than other coffee variations.
