Probably the single most popular and well known coffee liquor recipes in the world is called a Black Russian (so named for its color and the fact that it contains primarily vodka, an alcoholic beverage that originated in Russia.) A Black Russian is an incredibly simple beverage, and even so is much beloved by people the world over. Indeed, a Black Russian is made from the combination of two simple liquors and a handful of ice cubes (or crushed ice, whichever you prefer). To make the perfect Black Russian, simply combine one part coffee liquor (your favorite brand; each one has a slightly distinctive flavor, so just choose the one that you prefer) with two parts of your favorite brand of vodka and a handful of ice. Shake the ingredients together, and strain into a cup filled with ice. An alternative the classic Black Russian is the also-popular White Russian, which is simply a Black Russian with a slight tweak. Indeed, to make the perfect White Russian you simply utilize the same ingredients and preparation method as with a Black Russian, but with one small addition. Before shaking the coffee liquor and vodka with the ice, simply add some light cream. The amount and type of cream that you use is really a matter of personal taste – some people prefer just a splash of simple light cream, while others use equal parts vodka and half and half. It is really just a matter of how rich and creamy you want your beverage to be. A word of warning, though; combining large quantities of dairy products and alcohol are generally not recommended, so if you are planning on drinking excessively, you may want to use the smallest amount of cream that is still to your taste. Finally, one of the single most popular party beverages on the planet is actually one of the many coffee liquor recipes that are beloved by drinkers everywhere. It is the ever popular Mudslide, and as previously stated, it is a partier’s best friend. Generally, the Mudslide recipe is multiplied by about ten or twelve for each batch, and it is made of the same ingredients as a White Russian, with the addition of one part Irish cream liquor. Like coffee liquors, there are many varieties of Irish cream, and the one you use is a matter of taste more than anything else. In addition, while the traditional way to make a Mudslide is to shake the ingredients with ice and then strain them into a cup with more ice, as it is generally made for large groups, much of the time the ice, liquors, and cream are simply combined in a blender with a handful of ice and blended. Any of these coffee liquor recipes can easily be customized by incorporating such simple additions as flavored syrup or whipped topping to taste.
