On the other hand, for avid coffee lovers and those that only insist on gourmet coffee then buying flavored coffee from a grocery store would be taboo. Those in this category that enjoy some of the flavored coffees demand the same quality as that of their regular gourmet coffees.
To begin with, for a superior coffee that has been flavored the demand starts right from the bean itself. Only quality coffee beans will do and in fact, there are only a few coffee bean varieties that truly are acceptable for high quality coffee that is to be flavored. Out of 25 major varieties of coffee beans available, the most two favored for coffee flavoring are the Arabica and the Robusta. Each of these beans give their own distinct characteristics to the flavor being used for the coffee.
The various flavors are most often added during the roasting segment of the coffee preparation. There are no shortages of flavors either. There is hazelnut, chocolate, cherry, and Irish cream just to give a few examples. Needless to say, there are many more and new ones hitting the market all the time.
About 60% of the coffee that is produced in the world comes from the Arabica bean. It certainly is not the cheapest nor is it the easiest to grow. In many ways it is a delicate bean and susceptible to things like disease and pests. Robusta makes up the other 40% in supply, is a little more durable and easy to grow and work with, and therefore is not as expensive as the Robusta. This doesn’t make it any less desirable though.
When Arabica and Robusta are used to make flavored coffees, they each produce their own distinct taste. The same flavoring can be used for both of them but the end result will be very different.
A good quality flavored coffee may also begin with a base such as fine quality Columbian coffee. Another excellent base is the Jamaican Blue Forest bean, which has a wonderful flavor on its own. Good quality flavored qualities don’t usually contain any chemicals or additives.
A common mistake that is often made with flavored coffees is the way they are prepared for consumption. You can buy the finest quality gourmet flavored coffee in the world and quickly ruin it by improper preparation.
You should be sure to start with a good quality brewer that has been kept clean from prior coffee residue. Otherwise, you are going to get the taste of the old coffee blended in with the new. This may not and probably won’t produce a desirable result. The type of water you use is very important as well, and using filtered water should afford you the true taste of the flavored coffee.
